Summer Issue, 2016/2017

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes the opportunity to tackle all those DIY jobs and colour makeovers around the house that you’ve been dreaming about starting all year long. To get you inspired, we chatted to three prominent creatives about their take on the Plascon 2017 Colour Forecast and found out how they plan to work with brights, monochromes and all shades of blue this season.

We give you a glimpse into some inspiring homes, including a gorgeous light-filled house in Pringle Bay and a suburban stunner in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, in which dramatic colours are used to striking effect. And you certainly won’t want to miss our story on artist Lisa Swanepoel’s kaleidoscopic home, in which brights and art take centre stage.

Bagged with the summer issue of SPACES is Plascon’s annual calendar, which celebrates all the palettes and shades that have been on our radar during the past year. It is our hope that you will use your calendar as a reference source throughout 2017.

In this issue we have put together a host of DIY projects that will make your summer holiday a meaningful one. Breathe new life into old furniture with our step-by-step guide to revamping an old dressing table and bedside table. We also show you how to give a patio set a rustic makeover. We’ve put together a handy guide to wood care with input from the specialists at Plascon, and show you how one patio can be reinvented in four distinct ways. We’ve covered the know-how so you can harness the transformative power of paint to create enviable outdoor spaces in which to entertain and celebrate the season with friends and family.

Issue 20, 2016

In anticipation of the 2016 Olympics, we’re channelling the carnival spirit of the host city, Rio, with a punchy palette courtesy of Plascon – and show you how to introduce some of this vibrant energy into your home, of course. The heart of the home is long overdue for an update, so we give a kitchen four funky looks that are bang on trend but totally doable yourself. Add to that cool paint effects, handy DIY advice and gorgeous colour makeovers, and you’re pretty much set for a colourful winter.

The unique aesthetic of Brazil is on the radar of both fashion and interior designers, including SPACES stylist Tina-Marié Malherbe. She creates some gorgeous looks with this theme in mind. SPACES also reports back from the Milan furniture fair Salone del Mobile and the Cape Town leg of Decorex, showcasing the colourful looks we can’t wait to see more of.

This issue’s colourful transformations include a quirky hotel in Namibia, a modern art gallery in Durban and a contemporary bachelor pad in Cape Town. Stylist Liezel Norval-Kruger also shows you how to update your kitchen with four contemporary looks in eye-catching shades from Plascon.

Paint effect specialist Taryn Lee Field illustrates how creating one focal wall with a super-nifty stencil technique can give a space new life, how reviving a rusty lamp base is easy with an old-world antiquing effect, and how bringing a bit of island style into your lounge is a simple as keeping a steady hand.

Issue 19, 2016

Welcome to the autumn issue of Plascon SPACES. We’re kicking off the first issue of 2016 with some great news: SPACES will now be published four times a year, to bring you seasonal inspiration. The winter issue will be out in June, the spring issue in September and the summer issue in December.

It never ceases to amaze me how you can transform a space by being clever with paint and colour. It’s even more rewarding to see how peoples’ lives can be changed for the better making the environment in which they live, work and play more interesting and beautiful with colour. In our attempt to show how colour can uplift, inspire and empower, this year’s Colour Design Awards is focused on educational institutions.

For some inspiration, read how the Heideveld Primary School in Athlone was given a colour boost on page 62, and to find out more about the Colour Design Awards, turn to page 68.

This autumn, SPACES casts the spotlight on four colours we’ll be seeing a lot of during the season – all from Plascon’s 2016 Colour Forecast. A beautiful neutral called Ravine, a military green called Starlight Express and a two hues inspired by Pantone’s 2016 Colours of the Year – a pink called Savanna and a blue called Mamello.

To see the different moods these colours can evoke, page to our regular feature, One Room Four Looks on page 37, where a bathroom is given four unique guises.

Issue 18, 2015

I recently visited the London Design Festival, a great platform for discovering the latest colours, designs and trends. One of my favourite aspects of the shows is the inspirational talks given by some of the industry’s leading experts in many disciplines. They renew, refresh and affirm why I love what I do. This year, it was great to see designers having fun and creating talking points such as the scribble fabric by Kirkby Design, or making you smile, which Portuguese furniture studio Galula definitely did with their side table supported by cute little yellow duck feet. Read more about what inspired me on page 74.

Travelling is certainly inspirational, but I have also discovered that you don’t need to travel far and wide to find inspiration. This year I was fortunate to be a judge on SABC3’s Win A Home competition. Twelve aspiring designers were given the challenge to transform three apartments in Umhlanga Ridge. It was such a pleasure visiting the site each week to see what each of the teams had managed to do in the space they were given. I was blown away by the talent we have in South Africa, it really makes me excited for the future of design in this country. You can see some of the rooms on page 66.

It’s no surprise that people are happier and more productive when they work in a well-designed environment. I’m sure the employees who work for wi-fi company Ruckus find the quirky design of their office space uplifting and very on trend for what’s happening in the world of design (see page 40).

Our gift to you in this issue is a 2016 calendar, filled with inspirational images from this year’s issues of SPACES. I hope your 2016 is your most beautiful and colourful year yet.

Issue 17, 2015

I have had the chance to work on some fantastic projects this year, including the 2016 Colour Forecast, featured in this issue. Selecting colours with international colour trend experts has been one of my favourite things to do each year.

While this is the 17th year Plascon has launched a Colour Forecast, it is the first time we have a Colour of the Year, so we are very excited to introduce Plascon’s 2016 Colour of the Year, Atlantic Beach – an intense and upbeat blue inspired by Brazil and the Olympic Games being held there next year.

Another highlight for me this year was seeing the amazing work submitted to the annual Plascon Colour Design Awards by architecture and design students from around our country. The brief was to show how colour can be used in design to transform a space from ordinary to extraordinary. The winners and some of the finalists are featured in this issue on page 88.

I wish I had a magic wand to make all the entries that were submitted a reality because – wow – what a difference they would all make.

Enjoy this issue of Plascon SPACES.

Issue 16, 2015

This issue of Plascon Spaces has a real international flavour with inspirational people and stories from around the globe and at home bringing us the latest ideas and trends.

In this issue, our Décor Inspiration story is all about Pantone’s 2015 Colour of the Year, Marsala. If you’re not sure how to introduce this colour into your home, this article is for you.

I was lucky enough to visit Japan for the first time late last year. Mural artist Yaeko Kurimata is doing wonderful paint effects and murals in Japan and is leading the way in terms of colours and trends.

Tracy Lynch visited Maison et Objet in Paris and gives us some highlights of this trendsetting décor show.

We also talk colour with some of South Africa’s leading interior designers on page 88, and Charlie Vettori once again shows us the magic of paint effects.

If you work from home or your office needs a makeover, our One Room, Four Looks story is for you. Choose your favourite from four beautifully styled offices.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue and that you have the best time making your home or space the most beautiful it can be.

Issue 15, 2014

When I attended the London Design Festival in September, I went to a fascinating “super talk” at the Tent and Super Brands exhibition. This talk on nature’s influence on the design process was presented by four specialists in the field, including Oliver Heath and Yaniv Peer. It was incredible to see how much we can learn from building and design by looking at how nature does it – it’s called biomimickery. To me, the importance of including nature in our living and working spaces is clear, and this was highlighted by Oliver Heath when he spoke about biophillic design. It has been proven that people who live and work in spaces that are connected to nature are happier, healthier and more productive.

Nature, specifically rain forests, is the inspiration for the Natural Balance palette, one of the themes in the Plascon Colour 2015 Colour Forecast, and it is also the inspiration behind our décor inspiration story The Greenhouse Effect. I absolutely love the feature and have plans to do something just like this in my home these holidays.

This issue is filled with ideas of how you can transform your home with some paint and colour. See how Liezel Norval-Kruger transforms a lounge with four totally different looks using colour in One Room Four Looks.

If you’re feeling creative, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the trendy paint effects demonstrated by my good friend Charlie Vettori in our step-by-step section. I’m going to be painting these holidays, for sure. Whatever you plan to do, I hope you have the best time and, if you are painting, please send us your pics!

Issue 14, 2014

This issue of Plascon SPACES is all about trends and we had the best time putting it together. Our 2015 Plascon Colour Forecast was the result of a collaboration with Global Reseach London, who publish the trend magazine The Mix, which is available online and at international trend shows.

One of the biggest trends we are seeing is that paint effects are back. From multicoloured washes to geometric shapes and painted ceilings, you will find the very latest in the forecast brochure included with the magazine. The best part is that you don’t need to be an artist to do them – we feature easy step-by-step instructions using  some of the paint effects featured in the forecast brochure on page 90 of this issue.

Neutrals never go out of fashion, but they don’t need to be boring, either. Stylist Tina-Marié Malherbe inspires us with her take on using edgy neutrals in our homes on page 24.

In our One Room, Four Looks story on page 52, Liezel Norval-Kruger shows how a bathroom can be totally transformed using paint. Deep colours are right on trend and look fantastic in this space.

We recently completed the judging of the Plascon Colour Design Awards and I was blown away by the entries from the design students in this country. The brief was to show how you can uplift a space using colour and design, and simultaneously positively affect the lives of the people using it. We showcase the winners and some of the entries in this issue. Now, if only these could all become a reality! I need to start working on that.

I am sure you are going to love this issue as much as we have loved working on it. Happy painting!

Issue 13, 2014

Yellow is one of those colours I have had a love-hate relationship with over the years, but since Cape Town has been named the World Design Capital for 2014, I’m in love with it all over again. In colour therapy, it is said that if you dislike yellow you are more of a realist who prefers guaranteed results rather than taking chances, while people who love yellow are warm, creative, imaginative and enjoy a challenge.

Bright yellow was the perfect choice for this year’s World Design Capital logo. In addition to being the most visible of all colours, it’s one of the most uplifting. It brings feelings of hope and optimism as well as an air of radiance and cheerfulness. See how this colour is lighting up Cape Town in this issue.

We also feature one of the most important rooms in the house, the bedroom, in our “One Room Four Looks” story. Deep plum, neutrals and a sunny yellow were used, changing the whole look and feel of the room. There’s sure to be one that is just right for you.

Yellow’s complementary colour is, interestingly, purple. And with Radiant Orchid being named Pantone’s 2014 Colour of the Year, we couldn’t wait to do a décor story about the hue that we’re bound to see much more of this year. Get inspired about how you can bring shades of purple into your space in our “Purple Reign” feature.

Plascon has introduced some new products recently and I’m so excited about the launch of Water-based Velvaglo. To be able to paint furniture, doors and trims with a water-based product as good as the much-loved Velvaglo is great news. There’s no need to clean brushes with mineral turps and it’s so much better for the environment.

We hope you enjoy this special makeover issue of Plascon SPACES and that you will be inspired by what you can achieve with a new lick of paint.

Issue 10, 2013

Plascon SPACES has never been more colourful. Themed Colour of Emotion, the 10th issue of this PICA award-winning magazine will explore how colour can be used to improve not just how a space looks, but also how it feels. And what better place to launch this colourful issue than at Decorex Durban, South Africa's pre-eminent décor, design and lifestyle exhibition, from 21 to 24 March. The magazine will be on news stands after the show from 25 March.

The issue will explore the brightest new trends – such as emerald and other jewel tones – as well as the most inspiring spaces and makeovers in South Africa. We’re cherry picking the quickest, easiest and most colourful ideas for you to use in your home today.

As always, the magazine strikes the perfect balance between décor and DIY. The upfront INSPIRE section is full of colour trends, bright ideas and gorgeous inspirational spaces to explore. Then comes the hands-on CREATE section, showcasing more makeovers, how-to projects, product shopping lists and step-by-step advice from top stylists than ever before.

The Décor Inspiration pages are a gorgeous celebration of glitz and green inspired by Pantone’s 2013 Colour of the Year, Emerald, and created by stylist Tina-Marie Malherbe – Visual Production PICA Award winner for her Fig-inspired feature in SPACES issue 8.

In Colourful Ideas, readers will enjoy a collection of delicious, colourful and easy-to-implement interior ideas found in on-trend restaurants across South Africa.

Then we’re stepping into a selection of real inspiring spaces, including Malcolm Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel du Toit’s new fashionable Joburg shop and home, a Cape Town fashion editor’s funky bright apartment, and a round-up of offices, both urban and home-based.

In everyone’s favourite story, One Room Four Looks, we’re showing parents how easy it is to create an imaginative bedroom to suit any kind of kid.

And finally for paint-project enthusiasts and home tinkerers alike, the Paint Effects story will provide three step-by-step projects that totally transform a space by prettifying doors, skirting, woodwork and other trims.

Plascon SPACES 10 is on-sale at Woolworths, C.N.A., Spar, Exclusive Books, Builders Warehouse and other general retailers. Pick up your copy and find out why colour really is the best décor tool (and emotional force) you can use in your home. Change it. Love it. Get it. Now.

Issue 9, 2012

The 9th issue of Plascon SPACES hit the shelves on 10 December 2012, but this time as an award-winner having recently won a Magazine Publishers Association of South Africa's 2012 PICA Award for Visual Production of the Year for the innovative fig-inspired piece in SPACES 7, A Sensual Season by Tina-Marie Malherbe and art director Christopher Evans.

Just in time for Summer, the year-end issue of Plascon SPACES – a magazine dedicated to showcasing and translating the latest décor, design and colour trends using colour and paint - focuses on making the great outdoors even greater. Along with the selection of gorgeous interiors you’ve come to expect, the issue also celebrates the exterior space by featuring how to take paint and décor principles onto patios, verandas, poolsides and outdoor walls.

To ensure that the magazine continues to provide its readers with the best décor and DIY information, quickly and whenever they need it, Plascon SPACES has made a few changes to its editorial layout.

“For the first time, the magazine has been divided into two parts. The upfront Inspire section is full of colour trends and bright ideas, while the Create section is where readers will find practical case studies and hands-on advice on how to replicate the very latest looks,” says Plascon SPACES manager Anne Roselt.

Super-stylist Tina-Marie Malherbe uses a gorgeous summer palette to play with on-trend ombre, dip-dyeing and paint-dipping techniques in Décor Inspiration, and if you’re looking to get more ‘hands on’, Paint Effects shows you step-by-step projects that use paint to help revitalise old objects and spaces.

Treat yourself this summer by revamping your patio with One Room Four Looks and choose what best suits you, whether it is budget-friendly, eco-elegant, local and lovely, or ultra-glam, while exploring some Real space case studies with photographer Micky Hoyle’s African-inspired hotel, an abstract artist’s colour-blocked home and a stylish surfer’s wooden beach house.

Says Roselt, “The last issue of Plascon SPACES for 2012 brings you loads of colour inspiration from the bush to the coast, the latest colour trends, tips and advice for all your outdoor projects, aimed at helping you create your dream home - inside and out.”

Pick up your copy of Plascon SPACES 9 at Woolworths, C.N.A., Spar, Exclusive Books, Builders Warehouse and other general retailers and welcome a more revitalising summer – it’ll give you every excuse to stay outdoors.

Issue 8, 2012 - The Trends Issue

Plascon Spaces Issue 8This is a very special issue of Plascon SPACES magazine. Why? Because it’s the launch issue for the 2013 Colour Forecast – the culmination of a year of sourcing and scouting to find out which colours are making themselves seen and heard.

There has been no shortage of inspiration, thanks to international fashion weeks, the Olympics, pop culture, TV dramas like Downton Abbey (my personal favourite) and movies like The Great Gatsby. Due for release on Christmas Day, this much-anticipated film has already sparked a penchant for pastels, Art Deco designs and anything that sparkles. For more information on trends, please check out our new trends blog, www.plascontrends.co.za.

Colour trends are also influenced by the mood of society – we are drawn to colours that reflect how we feel. When stressed, we gravitate towards soft greens and blues, and when we need a little motivation, we turn to red. RightR32;now, society is craving stability. A haven of balance and harmony. Pick up any newspaper and you’ll soon find out why: uprisings, natural disasters, yet another rhino poached, the list goes on.

That’s why the theme for the Plascon 2013 Colour Forecast is balance. It consists of four palettes designed to help you bring harmony into your home, be it through calm colours to counter the chaos, or through energetic shades that can blast away blandness and give low spirits a lift. You’ll find all the themes and colours in the brochure with this issue, as well as loads of ideas on how to personalise the palettes in the pages of the magazine.

We hope that these colours will help you create a haven of harmony that’s perfect for you. Enjoy!
