Suede Effect on Walls

Plascon Suede is a premium, textured matt paint that produces a luxurious brushed suede effect when applied in a criss-cross method. The suede effect is enhanced by Plascon Suede’s ability to absorb and reflect light, providing a depth and richness that cannot be achieved by conventional faux finishes.

Materials

  • Plascon Polvin Hayseed (Y1-D1-3)
  • Plascon Suede Buckskin (SDE1)
  • A long-nap roller
  • 2 100 mm brushes

Method

Step 1
Apply a basecoat of Plascon Polvin Hayseed to the wall using a long-nap roller. If there are areas that cannot be reached with the roller, paint these with a brush first. Don’t worry if the first coat looks uneven and streaky. Allow at least four hours of drying time before applying the Plascon Suede topcoat.

Tip: Ensure that the wall surface has been properly prepared. It should be smooth, clean, firm and dry. For best results, ensure that your Polvin basecoat is tinted a similar colour to your Plascon Suede topcoat.

Step 2
Stir the Plascon Suede well with a flat paddle for 5 minutes before use, and at regular intervals minutes while painting. Do not dilute the paint.

Step 3
The suede effect is easiest to achieve using two people: one to apply the Plascon Suede Buckskin topcoat with a wide, good quality, 100 mm brush, and the other to follow behind with another dry 100 mm brush, stroking over the wet surface with random criss-cross strokes. Work in areas of 1-2 square metres, and overlap the criss-crossed areas to ensure an even finish. Take care not to allow the paint edges to dry until they have been brushed over in this way, otherwise dark lines will appear. Allow 30 minutes for the effect to appear.

Tip: Should you wish to paint over Plascon Suede, lightly sand the surface, and apply a single coat of Plascon Plaster Primer (UC56), or Waterbased Universal Primer (WUP1). Leave it to dry, then follow with two coats of Plascon Double Velvet or Cashmere.
